High Surf Advisory

Effective: Friday, January 14, 2022 - 3:59pm to Sunday, January 16, 2022 - 6:00pm

Alert:
...HIGH SURF ADVISORY FOR NORTH AND WEST FACING SHORES OF NIIHAU KAUAI OAHU AND MOLOKAI AND FOR NORTH FACING SHORES OF MAUI...

.Advisory level surf will continue along exposed north and west facing shores this evening and tonight as the current west- northwest swell moves through. A reinforcing, west-northwest swell expected to build late tonight into Saturday. Surf may briefly drop below advisory levels late tonight or early Saturday morning as the second swell builds. However, the High Surf Advisory has been extended through Sunday afternoon as the time below advisory level is expected to be short and during dark periods. The second swell will then keep surf along the exposed north and west facing shores at advisory levels into Sunday afternoon.

...HIGH SURF ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Surf of 10 to 15 feet along north and west facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui, building to 15 to 20 feet by Saturday afternoon. Surf of 8 to 12 feet along west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai, building to 10 to 15 feet by Saturday afternoon.

* WHERE...North and west facing shores of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, and Molokai, and for north facing shores of Maui.

* WHEN...Until 6 PM HST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Moderate. Expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.
Notes (optional):

A High Surf Advisory is issued when waves reach threshold criteria for a particular island and shoreline.

Warning Instruction:
Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.

Unmonitored lands and waters in the impact area described in the alert will also be impacted.

If conditions change before expiration or the event needs to be extended, an update or cancellation will be issued from Hawaii Beach Safety Website.
