High Surf Warning

*** START NOTIFICATION ***

Effective: Saturday, January 13, 2018 - 3:24am to Sunday, January 14, 2018 - 6:00pm

Alert:
...HIGH SURF WARNING FOR NORTH AND WEST FACING SHORES OF NIIHAU KAUAI OAHU MOLOKAI AND BIG ISLAND AND FOR NORTH FACING SHORES OF MAUI...

.An extremely large, long period northwest swell will build quickly during the day, peaking this afternoon and evening. Very large surf well above the warning level is expected beginning this morning and continuing through the weekend, and potentially into Monday for the smaller islands. North and west facing shores on the Big Island should expect warning level surf by this afternoon.

...HIGH SURF WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST SUNDAY...

* SURF...building to 40 to 50 feet along north and west facing shores of Niihau and Kauai, and north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui. Surf will build to 25 to 35 feet along west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai.

* TIMING...surf will build to warning level early this morning, peak this afternoon and evening, and hold at warning levels through the remainder of the weekend.

* IMPACTS...Extreme...Expect ocean water surging and sweeping over beaches, coastal benches, lava flows, and roadways, creating the potential for significant damage to coastal properties and infrastructure, including roadways. Coastal evacuations and road closures are possible. Large breaking waves may affect harbor entrances and channels with significant damage possible to docks, piers, ramps, and boats.
Description:

A High Surf Warning is issued when waves reach threshold criteria for a particular island and shoreline. High Surf Warnings may be issued up to 24 hours ahead of the arrival of the swell and may remain in effect for several days.

Instruction:
Large breaking surf, significant shorebreak, and dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death. Surf events of this caliber also have the ability to cause coastal overwash and significant impacts to shorelines, especially those already susceptible to erosion. Greatest impacts will coincide with the high tide occurring early Sunday morning.

Unmonitored lands and waters in the impact area described in the alert will also be impacted.

If conditions change before expiration or the event needs to be extended, an update or cancellation will be issued from Hawaii Beach Safety Website.
