*** START NOTIFICATION ***

Effective: Thursday, January 11, 2018 - 3:34pm to Sunday, January 14, 2018 - 6:00pm

Alert:
...HIGH SURF WARNING FOR NORTH AND WEST FACING SHORES OF NIIHAU, KAUAI, OAHU, AND MOLOKAI, AND FOR NORTH FACING SHORES OF MAUI. HIGH SURF ADVISORY FOR NORTH FACING SHORES OF THE BIG ISLAND...

.The current northwest swell will peak tonight, bring warning level surf to the north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai, and north facing shores of Maui, and advisory level surf to north facing shores of the Big Island. Surf will then gradually decline Friday, staying at advisory levels before an extremely large, long period northwest swell builds Friday night and peaks Saturday evening. Well above warning level surf should then be expected from Friday night and at least through Sunday afternoon.

...HIGH SURF WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM HST SUNDAY...

* SURF...22 to 28 feet along the north and west facing shores of Niihau and Kauai, and north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui, and 15 to 20 feet along west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai.

* TIMING...surf will peak tonight, then briefly subside below warning levels Friday ahead of an extremely large northwest swell building Friday night.

* IMPACTS...High...Expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.
Description:

A High Surf Warning is issued when waves reach threshold criteria for a particular island and shoreline. High Surf Warnings may be issued up to 24 hours ahead of the arrival of the swell and may remain in effect for several days.

Warning Instruction:
Large breaking surf, significant shorebreak, and dangerous currents make entering the water very hazardous. Always heed lifeguard advice and know your limits. When in doubt, do not go out.

Unmonitored lands and waters in the impact area described in the alert will also be impacted.

If conditions change before expiration or the event needs to be extended, an update or cancellation will be issued from Hawaii Beach Safety Website.
